Handwriting: Underwater Letter Search

You will need:

• Laminated Letter PDF

• Dry erase marker

• Magnetic Letters

• Magnetic wand

• Water

• Plastic Tub

• Dish soap

 

The Activity:

Children use their magnetic wand to pick out letters from a container of soapy water. They then practice writing the letter on the laminated letters worksheet.

 

Goals:

This activity works on using senses other than visual to look for letters. It works on identifying the letters, sounding out starting sounds and practicing letter formation.

Handwriting: Search and Rescue Letters

• Black construction paper

 

The Activity:

Search for letters on your image and practice writing that letter.

 

Goals:

Children use visual perceptual skills to uncover hidden letters. They then practice handwriting skills.

Handwriting: Sand Letters

• Sand Letter Cards PDF

• Tray

• Sand

 

The Activity:

Let’s go to the sea and play with the sand! Draw your letters in the sand by copying one of the letters on the cards. Children can use their fingers or a dry paintbrush.

 

Goals:

Using sand is a wonderful sensory medium to practice writing our letters. Writing on mediums other than pencil and paper is an effective way to learn how to write letters and numbers for children of all ages.

Handwriting: Salt Letters

• Salt

• Food coloring

• Ziploc bag

• White paper

• Small box

• Pencil with eraser

  

The Activity:

Children create colored salt using food coloring. They then practice letter formation using a the eraser part of a pencils.

 

Goals:

A multi sensory approach to handwriting is a great way for children to learn correct letter formation..

Handwriting: Pirate Telescope Letters

• Paper Towel roll

• Scissors

• Push pin

• Markers

• Pencil

 

 

The Activity:

Children twist the telescope to look for hidden letters. they then practice writing their letter on paper.

 

Goals:

This is a great visual motor activity for children. They practice matching upper and lower case letters then practice letter formation.

Handwriting: My Home Primary Strokes

Home Sweet Home Primary Strokes PDF

• Pencil

• Small bag

• Scissors (to cut the hearts)

 

The Activity:

Pick a number card, identify it on the sheet and draw the primary stroke associated with that number.

 

Goals:

This activity combines number recognition, counting as well as working on drawing primary strokes correctly

Handwriting: Land and Water Dropper Activity

You will need:

Land and Water PDF – You can add letters using a Sharpie.

• Dropper

• 2 Cups of water

• Blue food coloring

• Green food coloring

 

The Activity:

Children use a dropper to wet a paper towel to discover letters that are hidden underneath. Letters are then practiced on a separate writing sheet. Children trace the letters and copy the letters.

 

Goals:

This is a fun way for children to learn letters with the primary vertical and horizontal strokes. By using the dropper, they strengthen little fingers and then practice writing letters.

Handwriting: Feed the Monkey

• Printout of Monkey and Bananas on Card stock paper

• Tissue box or other empty box

• Chopsticks

The Activity:

Children pick up a banana using chopsticks. They name the letter, feed it to the monkey and practice writing that letter.

 

Goals:

Work on finger grasp on a writing tool as well as practice writing letters and naming them.

Handwriting: Earth Number Sensory Bin

• Colored Rice

• Easter eggs

• Sharpie

• Small erasers

• Pencil

 

The Activity:

Dig for small objects and count out the correct amount into plastic eggs.

 

Goals:

Children enjoy a sensory experience by digging through colored rice to find small items using tactile discrimination. Children also practice counting items and identifying numbers.

Handwriting: Captain Hook Letters

• Old Hanger

• Plastic cup

• Push pin

• Hot glue

• Silver foil

• Necklaces

 

The Activity:

Begin by preparing a Captain Hook then pick up a necklace, name the letter and practice writing it on the letter practice sheet.
