The Activity:

Learning numbers can be quite tedious however, there are fun ways to enhance your child’s learning. In this activity, children are asked to start with their number cards upside down. Then, one by one, they are asked to flip one card and find its matching number on the game board. Once a number is found, they will place a small eraser on top of the number.

Goals:

This activity is a fun way to practice number sense, improve fine motor, and sequencing skills.

Learning Corner: Feed the Dog a Bone Letter Recognition

Learn your letters by feeding the dog matching letter bones! In this activity, children are asked to match uppercase and lowercase letters and work on their sounds.

Goals:

This dog bone activity works on recognizing letters and sounds. For older children we can use to match letters to sounds or to match upper and lower case letters to each other.

Learning Corner: Bug Collection

The Activity:

Race around the house to swat the insects with the letters of your name IN THE CORRECT ORDER. Bring it back to the table and copy that letter. Now go look for your next letter.

 

Goals:

Practice visual perceptual skills, visual scanning as well as letter identification and writing skills.

The Activity:

Rainbow letter match is a great way to practice letter recognition and sounds! In this activity, children are asked to find a letter and then, place a button on top of it.

 

Goals:

Picking up small objects such as buttons helps promote a neat pincer grasp. When combining this activity with the PDF rainbow letter match, children are able to practice letter recognition and sounds and visual scanning.

Fine Motor: X Marks the Spot Coin Flip

The Activity:

Lay out coins in an X formation and flip them one by one with both hands simultaneously.

 

Goals:

This works on bilateral coordination as well as fine motor/in-hand manipulation skills.

Fine Motor: Treasure Play Doh Mat

The Activity:

Children roll the dice and make small balls that they turn into coins to cover the matching number they rolled.

 

Goals:

This is a fine motor strengthening and finger isolation activity using play doh. Children also practice counting skills.

Fine Motor: The Ants Go Marching

Children count out the matching number of ants, practice writing the number and use chopsticks to pick up the correct number of ants.

Fine Motor: Spring Words

You will need:

  • • Magnetic wand
  • • Magnet bingo chips. Using a Sharpie have a parent write the letter of S-U-N, F-L-O-W-E-R and B-I-R-D on the coins. ie. one letter per coin
  • Spring PDF print out

The Activity:

Let’s build spring words by using our magnetic wands! In this activity, children are asked to scatter their letter coins and retrieve them by using their magnetic wand. Then, they will place the counters on the paper to build the spring words.

Goals:

This activity aims at finding and matching upper case letters therefore helping letter recognition.

Fine Motor: Spray Bottle Letters

You will need:

• Spray bottle with water

• Chalk

• Construction paper

• Tray

 

The Activity:

Children practice writing letters using chalk and then strengthen their hands by spraying them with water until they disappear!
 

Goals:

By using spray bottles, children strengthen and develop the arches of their hands.
